![]() I think it’s a lazy way to write a “fish out of water” or “stranger in a strange land” story, and I think it usually ends up being an obnoxious mixture of tried humor and “haha I get that reference, but these fantasy characters clearly don’t!” writing. Fast forward years later and I find out that this type of storytelling is known as isekai and it’s actually pretty popular it seems, but to be honest it’s one of my most hated story structures. The humor and writing surrounding this boy is shit, and it made the movie all the worse. But it ALSO starred a generic white boy who, as it turned out, is the actual main character from our modern times who gets teleported back in time to a fictional China, and whom the story proceeds to center around with all of the lack of nuance and care you can expect. It looked like it was a Chinese mythology inspired action movie starring two great martial artist actors, and I was down. It stars Jackie Chan and Jet Li, and from the initial trailers looked fun. ![]() Have any of you seen the movie The Forbidden Kingdom? Tbh this is just a bad and poorly premised thread in general when hardly anyone here is playing or has an interest in playing the game which plays the (sometimes extremely) long game. With something like SoP Jack indeed wants to kill chaos, not really the case here. The clips of forspoken that have been circulating are an extremely bad representation of what the full game is going for. ![]() There's a complexity and nuance to Frey's character that, while I wouldn't call "literary" or anything, is there, and isn't immediately obvious, and comes at the expense of making her appear "unlikable". The other is a serious if somewhat clumsily-written examination of the trope of a chosen hero and the psychological burden that onus would place on someone already saddled with deep seated emotional issues. The characters are two dimensional with very simple arcs if any but they don't need to be much more than that. One is a Saturday morning kids show vibe with with self aware writing commensurate with that. ![]() As someone playing both these right now they're extremely different. ![]()
